1st St Mary's Marshfield Scout Group

1st St Mary's Marshfield Scout Group was set up in 2002 by several parents. Initially Beavers took 20 boys and girls aged 6-8. As the children became older, Cubs and Scouts were set up in 2004 and 2006. In 2011, a second Beaver colony was started because of large waiting lists and a second Cub pack started in November 2012. With the start of this pack there were 100 in the group altogether, led by 9 leaders, several permanent helpers, young leaders and numerous occasional parent helpers. At the moment we have 2 Beaver Colonies, 2 Cub Packs and a Scout Troop.

At the age of 14 our Scouts can move up to Explorer Scouts (ages 14-18) where they can embark on the Duke Of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Up until now our Scouts have joined the No Limits Explorer Scout Unit based in Rogerstone and more recently the ISCA Explorer Unit in Bassaleg.

In 2013, after 12 years in scouting, two of our original Beavers became the first from 1st Marshfield to achieve the Gold Duke Of Edinburgh Award and the Queen Scout Award. The Gold DofE Awards were presented by HRH Prince Philip at St James's Palace and holders of the Queen Scout Award are invited to attend the St. George's Day Parade and service at Windsor Castle. Two great occasions rewarding outstanding achievements :-)

In 2015 another two of our scouts achieved their DofE Gold awards and Queen Scout Awards and one also became our first recipient of the Explorer Belt following a memorable 10 day expedition to Norway with the Cardiff East and South team.

Leaders from 1st Marshfield are also involved with the Newport District Scouts Water Activities Team providing sailing experiences for scouts from all around Newport. Visit the Newport SWAT website to find out more.
